Customized tool vs. standard tool

A 360° feedback process that has been customised to meet the specific needs of a company is always preferable to a standard tool – even if its contents are of comparable quality.

Standard tools are still justified, however, as solutions specifically developed for customers are often only worth it with large target groups and deployment over several years. To reach this break-even point the company has to be of a certain size and there also has to be the certainty that the process will last over a longer period of time in a form that, as far as possible, remains unchanged.

With a standard tool it is important to weigh up whether contents that are 90% suitable are enough. The yardstick here is often an already existing competence model or perhaps a company’s own management guidelines. The availability of such models is almost a basic condition for the internal design of a customised process, as this must of necessity be integrated within a consistent overall strategy.

New development

Although management behaviour and competences are not newly invented in the light of a freshly-developed 360° feedback process, this development does enable an ideal customisation of the process to meet the requirements and language of the company. The result is usually ‘slimmer’ than a standard tool and can often do the job with fewer questions – and, in the end, it is precisely these factors that generate maximum acceptance of the process within the company.

In the planning phase the time factor should not be underestimated.
In our experience at least three months should be allowed for such a process, for managing its planning consistently from its inception to the start of the survey. Six months is even better, however, as otherwise the information phase in particular – which is critical for the success of the programme – is often too short.
